Dear Torsten,
Thank you for the wonderful job you did laying my slate- it has made such a difference. You were so patient and explained everything, and it took no time to lay. I would recommend you to anyone!

Dear Torsten,
A short note to say thank you for the excellent job you did for us in slating the floors of our house. The care taken to minimise mess and disruption
as well as completing everything planned on a day by day basis, was an important aspect but we were also particularly pleased with your ensuring that not only was
everything straight but also aesthetically pleasing. The care you took in the placement of the variously coloured pieces of slate has not only delighted us but also the guests who have remarked upon it.

We are thrilled with the result and would be happy to commend you to any prospective clients.

The Natural Stone Flooring DVD

How long does the DVD run for?

70 minutes, including the BONUS footage.

Does the "Natural Stone Flooring- A Slate & Sandstone do-it-yourself Guide" DVD show me how to assess my sub-floor to determine if it is OK for stone to be laid on top?

Yes, for most floors! All situations are different. We do give you concise information on assessing your existing flooring and this information covers all "common" floor structures. If you are unsure after watching the DVD and reading the information provided... just email us!

I have no prior experience in tiling floors. Is your DVD guide simple enough for me to follow?

Absolutely! This is a non-technical DVD which shows fail safe techniques that have been used
for decades to lay great looking floors that will last the life of your house. Follow the instructions and you'll lay a great floor!

What if I have a question that isn't answered on the DVD?

If you are having any trouble with your flooring project and can't find the answer to your question, email us at info@stone-flooring-tips.com and we'll help you.

Once I receive your DVD, what steps do I take?

Watch the DVD. Purchase the basic tools we recommend, plan a good time to start your project (follow the tips on how to minimise disruption to your home and household) — and then it's go,go,go!

How long will it take me to complete a floor laying natural stone?

Generally, if you have a 30 square metre floor area (an average size kitchen/dining room) you can expect to take the better part of 4 days plus 2 rest days for the grout to fully dry prior to sealing.

Here is an example flooring schedule:

Day 1:

  • Prepare the sub-floor by cleaning the area and ensuring the floor is sound and ready for the project to begin.
  • Inspect stone tiles carefully, making sure that you are happy with the colour and size and grade tiles (if required)
  • Determine the pattern and starting point

Day 2:

  • Laying of the floor commences

Day 3:

  • Laying of the floor complete

Day 4:

  • Grouting the floor is carried out

    • all mess is cleaned up
    • your floor can be walked on 6 hours after grouting is complete
If Sealing: most stone requires sealing!

Day 5: Grout drying day

Day 6: Grout drying day

Day 7:

  • A sealant is applied to the floor. The floor will be "out of action" for approximately 12 hours or overnight!

Day 8:

  • Life returns to normal

Do I need anyone else to help me lay the floor?

Not usually. If you have to repair or clean your sub-floor you may need help e.g., pulling up carpet, securing/strengthening floor sheeting, etc

Natural Stone Flooring in General

Why choose natural stone over ceramic tiles?

It really is a personal choice. Both natural stone and ceramic tiles have their benefits, limitations and appeal. We love real stone for its long life, its warmth, the fact that it is natural and doesn’t contain any chemicals and for its timeless beauty (it can be rejuvenated to increase its luster, unlike a ceramic tile).

Does Natural Stone cost more than ceramic tiles?

Generally yes! Though the better quality "stone-look" ceramic tiles are similarly priced. Cheap stone tiles, like cheap ceramic tiles maybe problematic in the long run.

Can I lay natural stone onto a wooden floor?

Yes. Stone can be laid onto most existing floors including wooden floorboard, wood sheeting, ceramic tiles and concrete.

Can stone be laid onto magnesite flooring?

Yes. Given the flooring in is reasonable condition. Please note that it is very important that you do not disturb (by wire brushing or sanding) older magnesite as it is known to contain asbestos, which may pose a significant health risk!

What about sealants and the on-going maintenance of natural stone flooring?

Most natural stone does require a sealant to be applied upon installation. Natural stone requires (or more so "likes") minimal ongoing care to maintain its luster, which is, of course, a part of its beauty!

What is a sealant?

A sealant is an impregnator, designed to be absorbed by the stone to form a protective barrier, preventing or reducing staining.

Are there environmentally friendly sealants available?

YES. There are good natural based sealants available. These are also more family and pet friendly than the zylene based sealants, which are commonly sold by flooring retailers.

Can I order natural stone on-line?

We don't recommend this! It's very important that you see the stone that you are purchasing to ensure that you are happy with the colour and texture.

Speak to a natural stone flooring retailer who stocks a good range of stone for specific answers to your queries on particular stones. It's important to see the actual stone and talk to a retailer at the same time!

Our important section on "Questions To Ask Your Flooring Retailer", which is a part of your consultation, will help you to think and talk like a professional... saving you countless hours and alot of money!
